Oh boy, oh boy! I really enjoyed Guilty Crown, and I know a lot of people weren’t feeling it during the first half. Even I had worries it would become just a typical school anime with romance and some action. But it didn’t! I’m very happy I stuck around. The ending was pretty decent too. Maybe a bit rushed but the epilogue was really nice and made my heart HNNGH.
Guilty Crown starts with Shu Ouma meeting Inori Yuzuriha, lead singer to fictional music group Egotist. This meeting causes Shu to acquire a strange ability where he can remove people’s “voids” and use them for weapons. Eventually Shu uses this ability to help a terrorist group that are trying to win Japan’s independence from the government.
Even though Shu was a pretty boring MC at the start if the series, he actually becomes pretty cool. I loved how during the second part of the series Shu’s actions become a moral grey ground. I love that in anything. It makes you think “What would I do if I was in that position” and realize that there is no right answer. This guy has gone through a lot of shit, and everything he did he did it because he believed he was protecting people. Even if those people he was protecting didn’t see it that way. POOR SHOE.
I also really enjoyed the art. It was very well done I thought, as well as the animation. The character designs were pretty great and even the designs of their outfits! Inori’s clothes were lovely. I’ve always been a fan of realistic art, and I think Guilty Crown has a really good mix of realism and typical anime features.
Oh and the soundtrack is AWESOME.
If you like action sci-fi with some romance thrown in I would suggest Guilty Crown. I would have to say to try and get through the entire series. The first part might not hold you interest but the second might!
