Anything with zombies is good to me, especially something that tries to look at zombies from a more realistic viewpoint. I really liked Sankarea, and judging from that ending the second OVA that will be coming out will most likely be an episode 13!

Chihiro Furuya has a strange obsession with zombies. It’s to the point he actually wants a zombie girlfriend. After his cat dies in an accident, he uses an old book he found to try and resurrect it and make it into a zombie. In the process, he meets Rea Sanka, the only daughter in a rich and powerful family in town. During their nights together to try and bring his cat back to life, Chihiro learns disturbing things about Rea’s home life, and Rea’s feelings. Eventually Chihiro succeeds in making his cat a zombie… as well as Rea.

Zombies in this show have a very interesting quirk. They need to ingest a specific poison, or else they will become completely mindless, only moving on instinct. The series also has a strange mix of dark and light. Rea’s father is a complete creep, and adds to the darkness of the series. But other times the series seems like a typical comedy with a zombie. I felt this mix was pretty subtle, but I will admit that I liked it better when it was darker and didn’t fall on overused anime cliches. Such rivals in love and all that.

I loved the art though, and Rea was a really beautiful lead girl. There was a few bits of gorey moments, but they were pretty good. They weren’t outlandish at all and really made your skin crawl. There are some fanservice moments, but I don’t really think the show is fullblown ecchi.

This series has a strange mix of horror and romance and comedy. So I guess if you like all three of those things, take a lot at Sankarea! I honestly liked it a whole lot, and I will be watching more of it if and when new episodes happen!
