Even though the premise of AKB0048 was pretty cheesy, the anime still had it’s interesting bits. I thought the character designs were super cute, and the mysteries of the show did grip me and make want to know what the hell was going on. Good news for the open ends is that the series will continue in 2013.
AKB0048 is set in the distant future where entertainment and idols have been banned on some planets. The popular idol group AKB0048 takes it upon themselves to travel to these planets and perform “guerrilla concerts” for the people. Four girls Nagisa, Chieri, Orine, and Yuuka all see AKB0048 perform when they’re younger and decide to join the group so all four of them can sing together. The series follows these four, and many other girls, trying out for the group, learning life as an idol, and coming to grips with mysterious choices that are made for the group.
The idea of idols being banned to the point where heavy battle machines get sent out to stop the concerts is a bit ridiculous to me. It just seems overly dramatic to me. I felt as if there was a lot of forced drama, but there were parts I thought were really interesting. Such as Takamina and Kanata’s friendship. And as I said the mysteries really interesting me and I really want to know the answers! I do love watching shows about idols though, so that aspect of the series was really enjoyable to me. The last episode and the last concert was really sweet and I enjoyed it.
I loved the 2D art in AKB0048. The character designs were really fucking cute and super pretty. I wasn’t feeling the 3D dance movements though. They were blocky and really stood out, not in a good way. I’ve never been a big fan of 3D figures in 2D anime though, so maybe I’m biased. I felt a lot of the VAs did a good job, this being their first acting in anime for a lot of them. If you didn’t know, most of the VAs of the girls are actually from AKB48 or other “48” groups as well. The music in the series are all actual songs from the groups as well.
If you’re a big AKB48, SKE48, and NMB48 fan then you’d probably really enjoy AKB0048. Even if you’re not, if you’re into pretty things and idols you’d probably enjoy it too. As of the first season, don’t expect anything super deep or thought provoking. It’s a sweet anime about friendship and love, with some dramatics in between.
