I really enjoyed Accel World!I really hope there is a second season, because this show was really fun to watch and I’d love for the story to continue.
Accel World is about Haruyuki Arita who is having a hard time in middle school. He gets bullied on a daily basis and is growing up apart from his only two friends. In this future, virtual games have become the norm and Haruyuki accels at them. Then one day he ends up at the same lunch table as the school’s most popular girl, Kuroyukihime or introduces him to a new game called Brain Burst. Haruyuki begins to come to terms with himself, his friends, and his new found feelings for Kuroyukihime all thanks to Brain Burst.
There seems to be a lot of “virtual game” anime this year, and I think Accel World is one of the best ones. Although it’s still pretty unrealistic, but it’s easy to get sucked into this new near futuristic world that is used as the setting. I like that Brain Burst is more of a fighting game and that there is a good side and a not so good side to using the program. Overall I really enjoyed the overall plot, but I felt the last arc with Noumi was a little overdrawn. But I really loved it when it started to heat up in these last three episodes. Actually seeing Noumi trying to fly when he say the birds in the last episode SORT OF BROKE MY HEART A LITTLE, NGL.
What I love most about the art is… NO 3D DURING THE BATTLES. The Brain Burst avatars are 2D art, which I love and always appreciate. The action scenes in the series were really great and I generally loved the style of the entire show. I also LOOOVED that the MC was a fat little waddling piece of blubber. He still had the same mentality as most MCs, but I feel like Haruyuki’s character was a lot more fleshed out and really explained WHY he was so withdrawn.
I think that if you’re into action anime with some sci-fi and a good deal of romance (and no ecchi!) then you’d probably really love Accel World! So check it out.
